Ben Goldscheider

Ben Goldscheider picture to come

Shiplake College 7.00pm

Conductor: Ian Brown

Horn: Ben Goldscheider

Our popular summer concert in June is held in a large marquee in the grounds of Shiplake College, following a picnic on-site. Nationalism and folk lore are prominent themes in our programme. The stirring vitality of Dvorák’s Carnival Overture, reminiscent of his Slavonic Dances, is followed by Brahm’s Hungarian Dances, adapted from folk tunes and inspired by Hungarian fiddle music. The Karelia Suite by Sibelius was written in a mood of nationalistic fervour at a time of Russian occupation of this north-east corner of Finland, while The Firebird Suite by Stravinsky was written for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, based on a Russian fairy tale. Since winning the Brass Category final of the 2016 BBC Young Musician competition, our soloist Ben Goldscheider, 19, has quickly emerged as one of the most exciting horn players of his generation. Concerto appearances this season include touring with the world famous conductor Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. For HSO, Ben will perform the virtuosic Concertino for Horn and Orchestra by Weber

Dvorák: Carnival Overture
Brahms: Hungarian Dances
Weber: Concertino for Horn and Orchestra
Vintner: Hunter's Moon
Offenbach: Barcarolle
Sibelius: Karelia Suite
One other piece to be confirmed
